    Blackheath Park

A Home Transformed for Everyday Family Living

Located in the Blackheath Park Conservation Area inLondon, this private family home had evolved into a fragmented, difficult-to-navigate layout over decades of extensions and remodelling.

Our client wanted a home that worked for everyday family living, with spaces that felt connected and practical.

One of the key issues was the  existing stair arrangement, which created awkward circulation. We reworked the layout, extending the grand staircase to the top floor while maintaining its character, improving flow, light, and usability.

The result is an elegant, functional home that supports the lifestyle of a growing family, turning an uncomfortable layout into a seamless living environment.

The main challenge in this home was its uncomfortable internal layout, shaped by multiple extensions and past remodelling.

The grand winding staircase, a striking architectural feature, connected the lower ground to the first-floor landing. However a secondary stair in the library created an obstruction, interrupting flow to the top floor and limiting usable space.

Our client came to E2 seeking clarity and functionality, wanting a home that could support their growing family.

The task was to retain the character of the existing staircase while extending it to the upper levels, improving circulation, usability, and the family living experience. All without compromising the home’s architectural integrity.

Collaborative, Client-Focused Design to Transform Everyday Living

E2 began the project with a home visit and live sketch session to fully understand the client’s priorities and how the family wanted to use the space.

The design focused on reclaiming the library by removing the obstructing stair and extending the grand staircase to the top floor, carefully matching its existing curvature and woodwork.

We guided the client in assembling a specialist team – including a structural engineer, staircase designer, and contractor.

We also managed the planning and building control processes, using our expertise in this area to help speed up the project and ensure there were no delays or expensive mistakes.

Thoughtful design details, such as a 3-meter drop chandelier and complementary lighting, enhanced both flow and elegance,,

The addition of a skylight floods the stairwell with natural light, creating an uplifting central feature.

A Home Transformed for Everyday Family Living

The transformation delivered a home that finally works for the client’s family, resolving circulation issues and improving the usability of key spaces.

Minor alterations on the first floor enhanced the ancillary bedrooms and top-floor utility areas, while the redesigned stairwell and reclaimed library now offer both elegance and practical flow.

The reclaimed library also now provides a bright, practical area for work and study

The project added tangible value to the home by making previously awkward spaces functional, creating a sense of openness and light, and elevating the overall aesthetic.

The result is a family home that balances design with everyday practicality, providing comfort, style, and usability for years to come.
