In light of the recent events in the country state governments are exploring strategic redevelopment plans to stimulate the economy, and looking to secure long lasting peaceful coexistence in Nigeria. E2 has been invited to pitch to assist in defining an architectural strategy that brings this vision to life.
INITIAL PITCH
For the purposes of this proposal, we have re-adapted our ‘Space to Grow’ project to demonstrate a contextualised visual response to represent our early thoughts for how to respond to this brief for a new mixed use development in Nigeria.
Our proposal is to look to designing architecture led by a sense of community that offers much more value than the typical ‘for-sale’ development typology. Efficiencies are gained in the site layout, with combined uses, resulting in flexibility of layout within each residential unit by design, as well as flexibility in construction and maintenance. The result is a development that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable over the long term.

CONCEPT
The concept for this proposal seeks to create places that are more than the sum of their parts.
By organising the masterplan to reduce isolated pockets of landscape, road surface and infrastructure, the spaces between the carefully arranged buildings are of a scale to promote organic activity, growth of community and nature.
Residential zoning features shared surfaces where the community and street life have priority over cars. There is enough space for each neighbourhood to have a village green for community activities, large trees and fundamentally; open space.

GENEROUS FLEXIBILITY
The homes are all designed to be generous, above standard, at least 15-20% over the new London minimum space standards.
We have done away with detached garages and attached these to the houses as insulated rooms. This becomes our ‘+ room’, which is adaptable with a number of standard variations, as is the internal layout of the ground floors.

COMMUNITY AT THE HEART
Village greens and other open community places, including allotments, are adjacent to the roads to give an open park setting to the journey by car into the community. Primary roads have protected pedestrian and cycle paths, which have a secondary benefit of providing a significant setback to the houses and enough space for large trees to form avenues. The overall feel is therefore of openness and of connection to nature.

At the forefront of this proposal is sustainability.

"Knowledgeable, professional, personable - and patient!
Sam and team came up with a scheme for our house that has maximised the space, transforming it from 3 bedsits into a beautiful family home. They provided support and guidance throughout the process (design, planning, tender, building works) helping us manage to budget and avoid several potential pitfalls. They brought practical advice and expertise - which really helped make the project a success.
I would recommend."
