Transforming a London Victorian Townhouse in a Heritage Setting

Bringing Light, Flow, and Connection to Family Life

Set within the Blackheath Conservation Area in London, this mid-Victorian townhouse had all the elegance of its era – tall sash windows, classic London stock bricks, and a double-height bay – but the layout hadn’t kept pace with modern family life.

The homeowners wanted a home that felt open, connected, and much more practical for a young, growing family. This included  a brief to transform spaces so they could flow from cooking to dining, living, and the garden.

E2 Architecture + Interiors was brought in to explore how to unlock the potential of the house, creating a home that honours and celebrates its character, while making day-to-day life easier, brighter, and more enjoyable.

Turning a Traditional Victorian Townhouse Layout into a Family-Friendly Home

Like many homes of its age, the interior was compartmentalised across multiple floors, leaving rooms disconnected from each other and from the garden.

The lower ground floor, though full of potential, felt tucked away and underused.

External access to the garden was awkward, with a stair that lacked a proper landing and flow.

The challenge was clear: open up the home without eroding its historic charm, improve connectivity between floors and garden, and create a practical and sociable environment for family life.

Our Approach | Collaborative, Client-Focused Design to Transform Everyday Living

Our process began with a detailed home visit and a series of conversations to understand how the family lived, moved, and interacted in their space.

From there, we explored a range of options – from small internal adjustments to more ambitious structural interventions – carefully weighing the impact of each change.

    Key interventions included:

    • Lower ground floor: The central spine wall was partially removed to create a flowing kitchen, dining, and living area. Openings to the garden were enlarged with fully glazed pivot doors, filling the space with natural light and giving the family a clear, intuitive connection to outdoor space.

    • Upper ground floor: Rear windows and doors were reconfigured to enhance light and garden views, with external stairs providing a safe, direct route between levels.

    • Garden and terrace: Terraces were reclaimed and refreshed with natural, sustainable materials, creating outdoor spaces that feel modern, functional, and inviting.

Every decision was made with a view to enhancing everyday life while preserving and enhancing the existing character and charm.

A Functional, Elegant Home for Intergenerational Living

The outbuilding is now a fully functional, independent annexe that allows privacy while maintaining connection to the main house. The main house benefits from improved flow, thermal comfort, and stronger connections to the garden and communal areas. Together, the transformations make the property highly functional, comfortable, and elegant, blending heritage charm with modern family living requirements. The project demonstrates how sensitive, expert-led interventions can unlock the potential of historic buildings without compromising their character.

    "Positive Responsiveness, Quality, Professionalism, Value"

"E2 assisted with the design and submission for the renovation of two floors of our house including an extension in Blackheath village. We cannot rate them highly enough - great ideas, professional and easy to work with."
