No. 29 is the end property within the group of listed buildings No.25-29 Fairfield Grove. The property has undergone several accretions and alterations to the external fabric along the north boundary wall and to the rear 2-storey extension and at ground floor through several incongruous extensions. These accretions have diluted and obscured the historic expression of the property as part of the group of cottages. As such they can be understood as causing varying degrees of harm to its significance.
In order to prevent further harm to the heritage asset through further incongruous alteration to its listed fabric and structure, a proposed sensitive conservation alternative would be to construct an extension that provides the much needed space required for modern day family living that is sympathetic to the host building. In constructing a new extension there is therefore the opportunity to reinstate the 1950s projection at ground floor, preserving and enhancing it, whilst also improving its setting, specifically in enhancing its setting to the rear garden.
The contemporary extension could be used as a vehicle to improve the landscaping to the rear of the property. In doing so, there is an opportunity to preserve and enhance the external fabric to the building by stripping the paint to reveal the original bricks. The proposals therefore includes repairs to the listed building fabric and alterations to the 2-storey rear projection to bring this in keeping with the group of listed buildings.
