This project is for a new build ancillary residential accommodation within the parkland/woodland setting of the Bickley Park Conservation Area. The proposals show sensitivity to the plot of land, its neighbours, and the locally listed building, which contributes positively to the appearance and character the Bickley Park Conservation Area.
The application site was partitioned from the plot of land it fronts, after its redevelopment into flats. Late Architect Ernest Newton who was active in the area and part of the founders of the Arts and Craft architectural movement, was a resident of Bickley and some of his works are still evident today.
Set within the Bickley Park Conservation Area and adjacent a locally listed building, several planning applications for a 2-storey development had been refused and the site was put up for auction. The current residents adjacent the application site, bought the land and are now seeking to bring it into use a part of their enjoyment of the area.
The design brief follows a conservation led design approach whereby, there is a desire to preserve and enhance the ‘park-like’ setting of the conservation area and the contribution the site makes to the character of the conservation area. This led to the concept for a discreet new single storey building that has a very low impact on the setting of the conservation area. The concept design aims to respond to the design brief and key constraints identified. The single storey contemporary scheme will sit on stilts leaving the existing ground minimally disturbed.
The concept also include the partial removal of the rear half of the existing garage at the current home of our client. A new external timber deck will subtly connect the two properties with a clear delineation of both buildings setback on a spacious plot of land. The orientation and location of the proposal are delibrate to reduce it’s apparent mass, scale and bulk to the impact on the openess of the conservation area whilst preserving and enhancing the park-like setting with a pavilion floating in the clearing of the parkland.
