HIGH QUALITY DESIGN
This basement extension and refurbishment of a Mews house in Paddington revolutionises this period property, and our client’s lifestyle. This project highlights what can be achieved when high quality design is placed central to the brief.
CONTEMPORARY INTERVENTION
A new rear lightwell brings natural light and ventilation into the basement, formed with bronze crittal style glazing that creates a feature contemporary intervention to compliment the heritage property. A sculptural solid oak feature staircase that also pierces through the building vertically, becomes the second contemporary intervention, allowing open plan living at ground floor.
THE IMPORTANCE OF ZONING
Each space is clearly delineated at ground floor, yet the open plan feels uninterrupted visually. The use of timber slats to the entrance creates a privacy screen, which ties in with the design of the staircase and the kitchen. The dining area is placed centrally, providing the overview of the entire footprint to the building and proximity to the external via the lightwell.
CREATING ARCHITECTURAL FEATURES
The new lightwell to the rear of the plan floods the basement and ground floor with natural light, enhancing the spaces and connecting them to the external environment, the sun’s trajectory through each day, and the passing of the seasons. This provides this landlocked property with vital amenity, and a new focus for the spaces at these levels.
SCULPTURAL USE OF SOLID OAK
The feature staircase ties all three floors of the building together, piercing through each space with solid oak timber slats that emphasise movement and verticality. This feature draws the eye and soothes it with its warmth and use of natural material.
CONTEMPORARY LIVING
The property features a basement office, gym, guest quarters, wine cellar and plant/utility, with the external courtyard visible from the primary spaces. The master bedroom with ensuite at first floor is complimented by the second bedroom, a family bathroom and day room, all whilst retaining the existing first floor terrace to the rear. The design seeks to be as close as possible to zero carbon, following a fabric first approach coupled with passivhaus airtightness principles.
