    Green Belt

    Replacement Dwelling

    HISTORIC CONTEXT

The site was originally part of a Grade II Listed early Georgian country house estate near Ascot.

Once home to John Lennon & Yoko Ono and then Ringo Starr before being sold in the late 1980s.

In the 70s, a prefabricated timber lodge to house Ringo Star’s chauffeur was constructed,

our client’s property, this sits on the southern boundary, subdivided from the estate.

    SITE CONTEXT

The site is located within the greenbelt.

The lodge is a single storey building,

which is supported on raised pad foundations.

The existing building is a kit form timber frame and beyond its service life.

Given its previous use it was largely unsuitable for our client’s needs or those of her son.

The project is therefore to demolish the existing building

and replace this with a contemporary home

    that enhances our client’s needs,

whilst respecting the character and openness of the greenbelt.

    PLANNING CONTEXT

The proposed dwelling replaces the existing single storey dwelling

and ancillary out-building with a two storey house over part basement.

The architecture of this project evidences careful and sympathetic consideration,

at the forefront of which is preserving the open character of the greenbelt.

The design strategy employed methods of minimizing

the overall footprint and breaking up the bulk

    with quality material composition,

    whilst providing maximum spacious comfort.

    ARCHITECTURE OF OUTSTANDING MERIT

The proposed design seeks to enhance its context,

creating a relationship between the open natural environment on and around the site,

    whilst respecting the neighbouring properties.

This places the property to the top of the site,

nestled between the two much larger existing properties adjacent.

By breaking up the form of the building, creating an L-shape dwelling,

the opportunity to diminish its impact is reinforced by design

using a change of material between the two main wings.

Using brick and timber cladding the building’s form

is softened and connected to its landscape.

    USE OF MATERIALS

The single-storey annex flat element features green walls and a green roof,

creating a valuable habitat for wildlife species whilst being environmentally friendly and sustainable.

This element becomes lost in the surrounding landscape

and further diminishes the impact of the overall property.

The landscaping around the property incorporates further planting to facilitate this effect,

and give prominence to the brick and timber clad elements as the primary dwelling.

The use of materials in this way contributes to the quality of the architecture,

which enhances its context further as a result.

MAKING THE MOST OF THE ASPECT

The focus of the primary living space, and the master bedroom above, is the garden,

and within this a large established tree favoured by our client at the bottom of the site.

The ground floor living space features a cantilevered corner glazed sliding door arrangement

to focus the trajectory of the view in the direction of the tree.

A generous deck terrace is provided for al fresco dining,

and the master bedroom also features a generous terrace above according views

out over the garden to the landscape of the greenbelt beyond.
